I heard the sound of thunder that ROARED out a warning
This morning I’m scared.
I read.
I listen.
I scream inside this can’t be happening.
I was thinking back on events of the last 70-80 years ’cause my dad is going to be 80 in July and I was thinking of all the changes he has seen. All the technology and computer changes and all political changes he has lived through. How his family grew all their own food and occasionally walked through the neighborhood to the local market. They knew their neighbors and waved hello. Occasionally there would be some idiots that called them a bunch of greaseballs and WOPs but for the most part it was a pretty innocent friendly time. I think all would agree that in many ways his generation was better off with a simpler life. A lot less complicated at least. When he went to war it was nazis or us. It was a totalitarian regime slaughtering innocent jews…or us. My dad grew up knowing people and working with people and golfing with people who were survivors of the holocaust. Growing up he would tell me stories and show me time-life picture books on WWII and hitler. raised catholic he taught me reverence of life, respect for my fellow man, and a keen sense of justice. A sense of justice that made him sign up to become a soldier and risk his life. I am scared that sacrafice will be all for nothing.
The reason that the Nazi party grew is that quite simply they made a group of people believe that THEY (as germans) were better than THEM (jews, blacks, etc.). They did this by repeating lies over and over through propaganda and government funded media. There was a lockdown on the information being released to the people and when they needed to they brought religion into it. What made the German people suceptible to theses lies? Were they dumber than us? Hardly. Were they less sophisticated in their world views. No way. They simply made compromise after compromise to thier belief systems to the point where Hitlers ideas made sense. Not to mention creating an economic climate that made then fearful and created class warfare to go along with the belief that the Jews were out to get them. And when you can convince people that their religion is the right one and everyone else is wrong…YOU GOT EM! Their religion is out to get YOURS. Its called DIVIDE AND CONQUER. Make it us vs THEM. The jews were killed because they had the “wrong” religion. The governemnt told the people that the jewish peoples origin and thier belief in thier souls about god…was DIFFERENT then theirs…and that was wrong. This was in my dad’s lifetime. The people believed it…millions died. When you mix religion and politics you RUIN BOTH and all people suffer.
This morning I read how over the weekend our senators reached out to churches all over the country through the family research council to end the filibuster. In case you don’t know the senate fiibuster is built into our constitutional law as part of the many checks and balances. Specifically Senator Bill Frist is complaining that democrats will filibuster and fight Mr. Bush’s juducial appointments. Mr. Bush is trying to appoint a few judges that many of our senators object to…so they filibuster. Because unlike a bill or law which can be overturned….A judicial appointment is forever. Now, of Bush’s 200 appointments…only like like 6 have been rejected and filibustered. Far less than the GOP did to Clinton BTW. So the “christian” senators are trying to change the law and make it illegal for anyone to object to the presidents appointments. They are trying to maipulate politics by manipulating peoples religions. This is crazy. I have blogged about this before so I will not repeat myself here…But what makes it even even worse is the speeches that were given at CHURCHES this weekend telling good church people that “They” want to block “your” judges. They are lying to to us. They are filthy stinking LIARS! Senators are not keeping people of faith off the courts! Thats a lie! They are telling the people that those who believe like them in the church are christians and that those who are voting against Bush are infidels. Its Us vs Them allllllllll over again. This is NOT a theocracy. Our president is not appointed by god. god is not a democrat or republican. 61 million people were told yesterday that the “godless democrats are trying to keep christians out”. That is AWFUL and scary. They are telling the church people that americans like me have the wrong religion. They are telling the church people that I am against them and people are lstening and believing. Example: I was in a hotel restaurant the other night and a bunch of people were chatting and they asked me where I was from. I said massachusetts. Immediately they launched into a tirade about democrats. john kerry. ted kennedy.Pacifists. Liberals. athesists. gay marriage. Jane Fonda. NRA. These people had a million lies about me made up in thier head when all I said was “massachusetts.” Now where the hell do they get that from? They get it from their talk radio and thier fox news and now they get it from their pastor who they think gets it from the bible. I am not a godless liberal. I don’t want to take away your bibles. I don’t want to take away your guns. I do not want more abortions. I am not trying to ruin your marriage. I do not love osama bin laden. When I tried to talk to them they said I was a “flaming liberal” STOP IT! WAKE UP! LISTEN TO YOURSELVES! Forget the red and the blue divisions and listen to eachother….This is making me sick and scared. Ugh. I gotta go.
Yesterday I heard a wind blowing that ruffled the pages of 61 million bibles. The pages fluttered and raised a thundering stink and when they closed thier leather bound bibles in unison it thumped like the boot heels of a million soldiers goosestepping their way to the capital. god help us all.
