Bring back the draft!

Posted in General by John

I saw this video on crooksandliars.com.
Its quite simple.
Its not a packaged piece on the evening news.
Its not a political ad.
Its just a woman calling Cspan and telling what her family deals.
Listen to her.
Comment… but only after you play the video.

Boris

Posted in General by John

Boris Yeltsin 1931-2007

I loved him.
He was the “enemy.”
He was a “dirty red.”
He was a “commy.”
He was a “lousy russian who loved his vodka.”

But whenever I saw him on TV I got a good feeling.
Whenever I heard him speak I wanted to hug the guy.
I don’t know much about his politics.
I know that he took Russia into a new era.
I know he brought democracy..whatever the hell that is these days.
I know he was there when Russia collapsed.
But I thought he was neat.
His name was Boris and it reminded me of Rocky & Bullwinkle.
The little spy guy. Wife Natasha…Yeah him.

I heard he died today and it made me sad because compared to some
of the clowns running around like politicians
these days he was really lovable and it made me think back to
the one moment
that sticks in my mind
One of the rarest moments in politics
is what I think of
When I think of Boris Yeltsin
I think Bill Clinton and him laughing
Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin Laughing like Schoolboys
Laughing like friends laugh when they tease each other
Laughing like pals
Laughing like humans.
I’ve only seen it once.
I’ve lived through Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II
And I’ve only seen it once.
Two leaders. Two politicians. Two enemies. Two Allies. Laughing.
I’ve recalled the moment a lot over the years.
And today Boris Yeltsin has passed.
So I think about him
and smile
and
watch.

My favorite warning

Posted in General by John

I have assembled a zillion baby things the past few weeks. Changing tables, car seats, strollers, diaper pails…And all of them have such awesome warning tags. Warnings which prove that 90 percent of the American people are either stupid or willing to sacrifice their child for a lawsuit. I have a collection of tags that have cracked me up…But this is my favorite. Its from the “Wiper Warmer.” Which, by the way, raises the temperature of a baby wipe from a frigid room temperature 75 degrees to a toasty 88 degrees. An invention which I would not have thought of in the first place. Hot towels are for red-eye flights and barbershops in three stooges films…Not for newborns. Anyway the frickin nobel prize winning designers at the wiper warmer company just want everyone to know that its not good to allow the child to play with the AC power supply, or to dangle it in their face, or to play keep away with it, or at the very least…Do Not Attempt To Plug Baby Into Socket And Animate Like Robot. So the tag on the cord shows this in true international picture language. Its a phone pic so sorry for the low res. Anyway, enjoy and stay safe!

For Kurt

Posted in General by John

Yesterday I was reading an old article by Kurt Vonnegut in the Atlantic Monthly. Funny thing he wrote about being in war. Seeing that Vonnegut is someone who really affected me, I think about his words DAILY, I decided I would share the article on my blog. I wanted young people to read him and hear of him and be moved by him like I was. But it was 7 PM and I was running late on my way to a concert to go see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah So I said “Baah, I’ll post the article in the morning.” Well morning is here…and uhm he’s dead. Kurt Vonnegut died last night. So yeah…

Heres that funny article titled Der Arme Dolmetscher.

And below are some thoughts I scribbled this morning.

FOR KURT

And so it goes
and so it goes
sanjaya sanjaya
nappy headed ho

terrorsist health care
Stem cells galore
nuclear enrichment
global warming al gore

saabs are junk
but dresden was art
fox news loves the troops and you but
jesus loves you more

And so it goes
and so it goes
sanjaya sanjaya
nappy headed ho

My Space ipods
Iran’s got the bomb
Xbox 360’s
no more polar ice caps

Lady Di is dead
Lindsay Lohan is not
Kramer’s a racist
Bono is not
The queen is old and alive
The president stubborn is still young and dumb
But He’s no clinton so full of ___

And so it goes
and so it goes
sanjaya sanjaya
nappy headed ho

Billy Pilgrim if you were here
You would tell me that my notebook is a kind of device
that humans use to keep information and communicate
with each other. It is a portable computer. A computer is
a human invention which was originally built after the atomic bomb
to add numbers that humans didn’t want to add
because the results weren’t really important enough.
So they pawned off the busy work to a machine.
A machine is a human invention that enables them to accomplish tasks a little easier.
A task is a human construct of the idea of an action that is necessary.
Necessary means you got to do it or ….Damn..

Kurt I fear for life without your mind.
I fear for us all.
You taught a class near my house toward the end of your life.
I knew someone that thanked you for all your books.
He said you were a jerk to him and you told him to piss off.
It was the right thing to do Kurt.
But thank you for the gift of objectivity. Thank you for your insanity.
Thank you for going nuts. Thank you for helping me see my world as the insane
pile of meaningless random things that it is. Thank you for helping me discover the absurdity of a human killing another human.
Thank you for going “batshit” crazy. Now when my life gets batshit crazy I know I’m not alone.
Thank you for the courage to stand up to all of the world and say. You are all batshit crazy! Everything you know is only what you know! Your information is random! Your pop stars are nothing. Your inventions are nothing! Your words are nothing! Your civilization is NOT civilized!

Dammit Kurt you are gone.
I can’t write anymore.
Next time I try to conjure up your ghost.
Visit me in a dream
and kindly tell me to “piss off!”

And so it goes
and so it goes
sanjaya sanjaya
nappy headed ho

April is the ______- est month! (Apologies To Gene Rayburn)

Posted in General by John

Last night I revisited virtual and mental locations I’d been avoiding.
April is the birthday of my brother Glenn.
It is also the month in which my daughter will be born.
And uhm its 25 degrees today.
And uhm it was 60 degrees last week.
And uhm its not winter.
and uhm its almost summer.

So now that its April I notice all the stuff that was snowbound and buried.
The yard is covered with sticks and stuff that fell before the storms and froze.
I visited my fathers grave and my brothers grave.
And uhm they look good.
And uhm the decorations survived the winter.
And uhm someone left a figurine on the headstone.
And uhm the ground is too wet to kneel.

So I’m in between office spaces too. I’m remodeling my cellar and building an office and man cave but in the meantime my old office is now a nursery. So I have all this stuff in boxes. So I had to go through all this stuff and decide to keep it or chuck it. But its virtual now and some of the “space” I’m clearing is hard drive space. Keep it? Back it up to disc? Delete it? Those are my options. In the process of this I found some old videos of my brother in an iMovie project called “Glenn’s First Night.” It was his first gig with a “christian” band called -Forgiven-. I usually avoid christian stuff but THIS gig I went to. It was at a coffee house. I remember feeling really skeeved by the joint. All the people looked like Jim Jones Guyana people. I certainly did not drink anything from the snack bar. But the people were nice. And the owner was nice. And the band played and then my brother spoke. He had been speaking at AA meetings for a while so he was quite comfortable with the idea of public speaking. But tonite I was there and the audience were not understanding drug addicts. They were god addicts. Some of them in denial. Some of them in full acceptance. Some of the audience, like myself, were former god addicts…ya know… in recovery. But anyway it was surreal and it sticks in my mind and for some reason I want to share this with the world. So I updated my brothers web site GlennMorello.Com And I also posted a you tube clip of the night. Want to see it? View it below. Feel free to watch it.

And uhm feel free to share it.
And uhm thanks for reading this far.
And uhm in your comments feel free to pretend you are T.S. Eliot for a few seconds and fill in the blank of subject line.
